5 Negotiation Secrets From Sophia Amoruso That Will Change How You Make Deals | The Skinny

Negotiation gets a bad rap. People think it’s awkward, aggressive, or reserved for boardrooms and billion-dollar deals. But that’s just not the truth.

Negotiation is everywhere. It’s asking for a better rate, setting boundaries with your time, locking in brand partnerships, or even just making sure you’re getting what you actually want out of life. Whether you’re building a business, growing your personal brand, trying to get a little something extra at a hotel, or simply becoming more intentional with your decisions, knowing how to negotiate is a power move.

The truth? The people who get what they want aren’t just lucky, they’re strategic. And they’re not afraid to ask.

That’s why we loved this insight from Sophia Amoruso.

You may have heard her on The Bossticks, but if you don’t know her, she’s the founder of Nasty Gal and the original Girlboss. She’s someone who built a brand from the ground up and knows exactly how to navigate everything from scrappy beginnings to high-stakes deals.

She recently shared a post breaking down what took her 15 years to learn about negotiation in basically 5 seconds. And of course, we were taking notes.

Her take? Negotiation isn’t about haggling. It’s about designing the deal you actually want.

So whether you’re a founder, starting a business, negotiating your salary, or even just trying to upgrade your everyday life, this post is for you.

5 Negotiation Secrets From Sophia Amoruso That Will Change How You Make Deals

    1. Before you even start

Negotiation doesn’t start when you sit down, it starts way earlier.

    Figure out:

What they actually need from you (and what pressures they’re under – budget, deadlines, approval hoops, whatever).

Your walk-away number and your ‘stretch’ ask.

A few trade-offs you can give that cost you nothing but feel valuable to them.

    2. Stop thinking yes/no

It’s not just “I win” or “I lose.”

Sometimes you win on price but give up rights.

Or you take less cash but get equity or control of your work.

Or you play it safe now so you can land a bigger deal later.

You’re not looking for one win- you’re building a package of wins.

    3. Money is not the only chip

If they’re stuck on price, move the conversation.

    Ask for shorter exclusivity.

    Faster payment terms.

    Performance bonuses.

Right to reuse or resell your work.

Get creative – sometimes the best part of a deal isn’t the check.

    4. Get intel they don’t know you have

    Don’t just Google “average rates.”

    Find out:

What they’ve paid for similar work before.

Who inside the company is your biggest fan.

What competitor they really don’t want you working with.

That’s leverage you can actually use.

    5. Price is a signal

If you price too low, people assume you’re inexperienced, in low demand or a headache later.

Set a number that says, “I’m good at this, and you’re lucky to get me” – and then deliver so it feels like a bargain.

    +++

As Sophia says, “Negotiation isn’t about haggling—it’s about designing the deal you actually want. I’ve used these strategies to close everything from thrift‑store finds to multi‑million‑dollar deals.”

If you want her full playbook and free guide you can comment on her post and she’ll send it to you.

At the end of the day, negotiation isn’t about being the loudest person in the room, it’s about being the most intentional.

So next time you’re faced with an opportunity, don’t just accept what’s on the table. Ask for more (be nice!), get creative and design something better.
