    ‘Cape Fear’ Ending Explained

Cue that colossal four-note theme music: Apple TV‘s Cape Fear has thundered to its bloody conclusion. Javier Bardem’s bright-eyed, heavily tattooed psychopath Max Cady has had his final confrontation with Anna Bowden (Amy Adams) and her husband Tom (Patrick Wilson), the lawyers he blames for putting him in prison for years. Their teenage children, Natalie (Lily Collias) and Zack (Joe Anders), are once again caught in the crossfire.

**Spoilers for Cape Fear, now streaming on Apple TV**

Creator and showrunner Nick Antosca is adapting three classic thrillers in one with this show: John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners, J. Lee Thompson’s 1962 movie Cape Fear with Robert Mitchum as Cady, and series executive producer Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake with Robert De Niro in the arch-villain’s role. But this expanded reinterpretation of all that source material has been full of completely unexpected twists and turns.

Who lives and who dies at the end of this long strange trip into Max Cady’s heart of darkness? We explain it all below.

Cape Fear Ending Explained: Does Max Cady Die? Does Anna, Tom, Natalie, or Zack die?

The short answer is no. Like the family he targeted for destruction, the charismatic sociopath Maximiliano Cady is still alive when the credits roll. But he’s probably not very happy about it.

In the finale, Max is arrested after assaulting Anna during the opening of his new restaurant, after she confronts him with evidence of his crimes. He escapes custody and heads directly to the home of Anna Devereaux Bowden, her husband Tom, and their teenage kids Natalie and Zack, all of whom he has tormented mercilessly.

Evading detection by the cops by standing on the roof in the middle of a hurricane like an evil Batman, Max then descends into the house and holds everyone hostage while he conducts a bizarre show trial to convict Anna and Tom of their crimes against him.

That’s when Anna drops the bombshell news that the unborn son Max was wrongfully convicted of killing never died at all. Max’s sister Crystal (Juliette Lewis) — who tormented him as a child before he grew up, seduced her, and psychologically broke her — murdered Max’s pregnant wife Melissa and carved the infant out of her stomach, claiming him as her own. The boy grew up to be Luke (Max Mattern), the hapless kid Max burned to death, along with Crystal and their abusive father Bob (Ron Perlman), the day before.

Max, suffering from multiple head injuries, is nearly crippled by the revelation that he killed his own son. This gives the Bowmans the chance they need to break free one by one and take Cady down. Tom and Anna wind up holding him underwater in the same pool where he once deposited the dismembered body of their friend Ray (Jamie Hector).

But Anna stops short of drowning him. “Let him die in a cage,” she tells Tom, and they pull the defeated killer out of the water. Though we don’t see it, it is 100% safe to assume he was subsequently arrested, tried, convicted, and put in prison for the rest of his life. For a man whose worst nightmare is loss of control, a nightmare he already lived through as a child and a prisoner, this is a fate worse than death.

What Does the Final Shot in Cape Fear mean? Is Max Cady Back?

Again, the short answer is no. For one thing, if he’d escaped from prison the Bowdens would have been notified. For another, that’s implausible even by the fantastical horror-thriller standards of Cape Fear.

But that doesn’t mean they’re free of Max Cady. One by one, the Bowdens show signs that he’s a lingering presence in their lives. Natalie doesn’t open the paternity test results that might establish Max is her biological father, but the envelope is just sitting there on her bed, waiting for her to look inside. Zack still seems slightly off from all the drugs Max and his daughter Neveah dosed him with. Tom gets nervous when he thinks he sees movement in the trees, as if someone’s out to get him.

The show’s final shot is of Anna literally looking over her shoulder, before the image cuts to negative red-and-white. This technique, most prominently used during the all-American family opening of the series premiere and the discovery of Ray’s body in the pool, is symbolic of menace and fear, but idoesn’t mean a man in a Member’s Only jacket is about to come out of the restroom and whack her, so to speak. It means that as a result of their experiences with Max, fear is and will remain a presence in her life, in all their lives, forever. Hey, they don’t call it Cape Catharsis!

Will there be a Cape Fear Season 2?

While I suppose it’s possible to do such a thing — Max is still alive, as is his messed-up daughter Neveah, though both are in prison — Apple TV has announced no plans to give this limited series a second outing. Honestly, I’m relieved. The Bowdens need a break.
