‘Silo’ Season 3 Episode 5 Recap: “Memory”

Hot damn, this is the kind of episode you build mystery boxes for. This obviously pivotal episode of the third season of Silo is titled “Memory,” for multiple reasons. In part, it’s because we are afforded glimpses of the past we skipped over in the transition between seasons. In part, it’s because with the help of her friends, Juliette begins, at last, to remember.

Flashback sequences that kick off in striking black-and-white take us back to the moments after the fire engulfed Juliette and Bernard in the escape hatch — how friends and enemies worked together to save them both, how Camille Sims was ordered to execute them by the voice in the Vault, how Robert Sims rebelled and conspired with Walker and Carla McLain (Clare Perkins) to fake Bernard’s death and hide him in the Digger Void, far from his wife’s prying eyes.

It’s immensely satisfying to watch this conspiracy of silence expand over the course of the episode. Before long, it includes Bernard, Robert, Walker, Carla, Juliette, Shirley, Knox, Lukas Kyle, Patrick Kennedy, Deputy Hank, and relics dealer Regina Jackson (Sonita Henry), an ex-girlfriend of Juliette’s late boyfriend George, whose death while inquiring into the Silo’s mysteries kicked everything off for Juliette back in Season 1.

Once everyone compares notes, a picture emerges, blowing many a mind. There are fifty silos, including a Silo One that monitors everyone else and can kill them at will using a process called Safeguard, triggered by the AI in the Vault. Usually, only the head of IT and his or her shadow are privy to this information, though even they don’t know how the mass murder would be achieved. The rules for all this are called the Order, which is like a secret version of the Pact just for the Silo’s overlords.

Four people, however, have learned about the Safeguard by reaching the outer door below the Silo: Salvador Quinn, who led a failed revolution over it; Judge Mary Meadows, who quit her job in IT and became a despondent drinker before Bernard killed her; Lukas Kyle, who’s been a fugitive ever since…and George Wilkins (Ferdinand Kingsley), Juliette’s boyfriend, who died for what he knew.

The Algorithm wants Lukas and Bernard dead because they know the secret and can’t be trusted not to blab. It wants Juliette dead because she alone knows that the Safeguard can be counteracted. She learned it from her friend Solo (Steve Zahn) over in Silo 17, but the forgetting drugs have kept her from remembering. The conspiracy gathers various artifacts tied to her past in hopes of triggering her memories, but nothing really does the trick, not even the watch tying her to both George and her late father, who died sacrificing himself while wearing it.

In a surprisingly affecting moment, Robert Sims comes through. Throughout the season we’ve heard him talk about the trauma Juliette’s home invasion last season inflicted on his young son. So he’s been reluctant to part with the Pez dispenser relic he gave the kid as a security blanket…and as a totem to remember him by if his wife doses the Silo with Vitamin D+. Yet he does so because he knows George gave it to Juliette back in the day, so it wasn’t his to give away in the first place.

And just like that, wham, she remembers all of it, including how to stop the Silo from poisoning its inhabitants, by capping a pipe leading in from the outside.

But before we can see what results, we’re whisked back to the past, as the onboard computer in Daniel and Helen’s car hijacks them the minute they start pointing fingers at AI oligarch Per Stensen, who was present the night of Daniel’s sister’s ill-fated raid.

Elsewhere, Sheriff Paul isn’t directly involved in the conspiracy yet, nor are his wife or the other Outsiders. But he has a gripping side quest with Carla, in which he learns that theft has left the Silo with only two years of critical supplies left before the lights go out, the crops dry up, and everyone dies in the dark. Carla’s new shadow, Orla, was investigating the theft, and likely died for what she discovered.

This episode clears up one foggy area after another, and it feels damn good to see how clearly the resulting picture emerges. I’m also a big sucker for cooperation, and I loved watching this disparate bunch come together for each other. I also enjoyed seeing a return to the big logistical puzzles that marked previous seasons, in this case the challenge of transporting the badly wounded, possibly poisonous bodies of Juliette and Bernard to the med bay through a Silo wracked by revolution. I probably would have left the present-day political-thriller material entirely behind, but seeing our heroes get the Michael Hastings treatment is bracingly upsetting, because it’s all too plausible.

This is strong stuff, and after some hiccups leading here, it puts Silo in a terrific position for starting this season’s back half. Humanity vs. AI for all the marbles? We all have a rooting interest in the outcome.
