Prison Break fans, rejoice!
Hulu is taking a page from Michael Scofield’s brilliant playbook and creating a reboot inspired by Paul Scheuring’s original FOX series, which ran from 2005 to 2009 with a revival season in 2017. And there’s a chance to reunite with some fan-favorite original characters!
More than two decades after Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) intentionally got locked up to break his wrongfully accused brother, Lincoln (Dominic Purcell), out of prison, Elgin James (Mayans M.C., The Outlaws) is putting a new spin on Prison Break‘s winning concept. Per Deadline, the upcoming reboot will follow “an ex-soldier turned corrections officer takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America to prove just how far she’ll go for someone she loves.”
Although the new series will star a whole new cast — including Emily Browning, Lukas Gage, Drake Rodger, Clayton Cardenas, JR Bourne, Georgie Flores, Myles Bullock, and more — Prison Break fans are hoping to see some original characters on-screen again. And their wishes may be granted!
In June, Gage told The Hollywood Reporter that “we might see a couple of OGs coming back.” So naturally, when DECIDER spoke with Prison Break alum William Fichtner for his new Apple TV series, Lucky, we had to ask if he would ever consider reprising his role of FBI agent Alexander Mahone.
“Listen, when we finished up the four original seasons I was in, it felt like we completed it,” Fichtner told DECIDER over Zoom. “Now, if something was to come along, it would depend. It will depend on what it was and how it was written. You know?”
Fichtner assured DECIDER that he had yet to get involved in Hulu’s reboot in any official capacity, but he did say he’d be open to potentially revisiting the complex character down the line if the story felt right.
“I mean, never say never to anything. But I haven’t heard anything, so let me know if you do,” Fichtner said.
Miller previously confirmed that he’s done playing Scofield, sharing that as an openly gay actor, he wants to step away from portraying straight characters and shift focus to on-screen representation. But in addition to Fichtner, there’s potential for several other OG stars to pop up in Hulu’s reboot — especially since the new series will be set within the same universe as the original.
Back in 2025, Deadline reported that Browning will portray Cassidy Collins, “an ex-soldier turned corrections officer who takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America.” Gage will star as Jackson, “a politician from a well-to-do background in his first congressional campaign.” And Rodger will portray Tommy, “an inmate at one of the deadliest prisons in America, incarcerated ten years ago.”
On August 17, Deadline announced six more recurring reboot roles: Sam Trammell (True Blood) will play Jarrod Boggs, “a powerful figure with deep roots in West Virginia.” Sean Bridgers (Deadwood) will star as Hollis, “a devoted family man trying to rebuild his life.” Chris Coy (Black Rabbit) is Mule, “a dangerous and unpredictable inmate. Kerry Bishé (Halt and Catch Fire) will play Mary Smith, “a mysterious and dangerous female inmate.” Robin Weigert (Deadwood) will star as Chaplain Bannon, “the prison chaplain who counsels inmates in need.” And Jean Louisa Kelly (Uncle Buck) will portray Margaret, “the new matriarch of a power-brokering political family.”
