Why the Olympia Still Holds the Crown as the Pinnacle of Bodybuilding

With 62 Olympias now in the history books, the biggest event in bodybuilding is still searching for ways to continue its dominating grip on the flex game. While the ‘O’ increases its exposure on a global scale, the brand has been keen to level up on issues such as inclusivity and accessibility but still insists on the absolute best of the best in terms of the body of skills required to succeed on the grandest stage.

So, with all this in mind, M&F takes a deep dive to investigate why the Olympia event remains king among the athletes and its fans, and what the next steps are for the evolution of the O.

On Sept. 26, 2026, Jake Wood, who is the current owner and proud custodian of the Mr. Olympia competition, presented the event’s 20th winner, Nick “The Mutant” Walker, with the hallowed Sandow. This, of course, is an iconic trophy that has come to both symbolize and immortalize the greatest physiques on earth. There’s no doubting that since the creation of the Mr. Olympia concept in 1965,  the event has stamped a seal of approval on the most impressive bodybuilders, and it all started with Joe Weider.

“It’s the absolute best,” says Andrei Deiu, a popular Romanian Men’s Physique competitor, who has now graced the Olympia stage twice.  “All of the best bodybuilders in the entire world meet at Olympia.”

Why Is the Mr. Olympia the Most Prestigious Bodybuilding Competition?

Prior to 1965, some Mr. America, Mr. World, and Mr. Universe events would bar winners from defending their titles. This meant that legends like Bill Pearl, Reg Park, and Larry Scott would have less trophies to aim for and face early retirement or a stint on the guest posing circuit. To fill this void and fuel some further ambition, Joe Weider changed the game with the Olympia, because this major event finally afforded such icons a chance to re-enter the same competition, providing these bodybuilders with an opportunity to dominate for as long as their bodies would let them. Larry Scott would be first to make the most of this development, winning the Mr. Olympia title in 1965 and 1966, while Lee Haney and Ronnie Walker’s record tying eight trophies remains the number to beat.

Of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s seven Mr. Olympia victories between 1970 and 1980 only helped to blast the Olympia brand into another dimension, followed by legends like Dorian Yates, Jay Cutler, and Phil Heath. But while the days of the muscle mag cover star are now all but over, the rise of bodybuilders as social media influencers is now the current media of choice, and heroes like Chris Bumstead boast more than 26 million followers, while Sam Sulek, who only gained his pro card in 2025, has amassed more than 4.5 million subscribers on YouTube.

This year, Olympia organizers continued a long-held tradition of finding new ways for fans to meet these inspirational figures, as current, former, and future champions assembled at the Palms Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, to rub shoulders with their excited followers. Of course, meet and greets are now par for the course at bodybuilding events, but the Olympia brings the stars and fans together in a unique way. “There’s no other event like this,” Breon Ansley tells M&F, while posing for selfies with a line of fans that begins in a nightclub at the Palms, and runs all the way to a swimming pool outside. “The world comes together. Like-minded, and with a difference kind of energy,” explains the 212 division competitor.

While the Arnold Classic has become a worthy date on the bodybuilding calendar and is flashing the cash to attract the biggest names in the business, the chance to compete in the Open division at the Arnold comes by way of an invite rather than an official qualification via the IFBB. “The Arnold is great, but it’s nothing like the Olympia,” says Blessing Awodibu, who has competed at both events. “Olympia is that one show, a title that every single bodybuilder wants to win. It is not easy to earn the qualification to compete here. It shows that you’re the best in the world.”

How Has the Mr. Olympia Evolved Across Bodybuilding Eras?

While press conferences, meet and greets, plus all the pomp and ceremony you can handle are an essential aspect of the Olympia, what happens on stage is the real driver of its enduring success. “To me, the Olympia means the pinnacle,” says Ansley between what seems like his gazillionth selfie with a fan. “It is essentially what we’ve been working our whole life for. The Olympia means excellence… Worldwide excellence.”

But with other bodybuilding titles to strive for on the circuit, why is Olympia still seen as the ultimate show to win? “It’s the history of champions and the level of difficulty to make it to the top here,” explains Brandon Curry, and he should know, because the man they call ‘The Prodigy’ lifted the coveted Sandow in 2019. “Each champion receives the utmost respect, because each has a different journey, and represents a difference signature in the sport, and none of them look exactly alike.”

Indeed, Olympia has gone through distinct eras where different types of physique reign supreme. There was the Golden Era of symmetry, tight waists, and classic proportions popularized by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, and Sergio Oliva. Then there was a Mass Monster Era as the millennium approached, highlighted by Dorian Yates, Lee Haney, and Ronnie Coleman. These days, bodybuilders try to figure out year by year, what fans and judges would like to see, blending conditioning and size to command a majority of approval.

Olympia Continues to Evolve in Order to Keep its Crown

While it is an indisputable fact that the Open division is the main draw in terms of ticket sales, there are other categories that are catching fire too. Chris Bumstead’s six-year grip on Classic Physique has made this division another storied group, while Ryan Terry’s current four-year run as Men’s Physique champion continues to present yet another version of what a phenomenal physique can look like. Then there’s the emergence of new divisions, with Olympia organizers reflecting the changing tastes of the fitness culture, like the new Fit Model category introduced in 2026. In fact, since the Ms. Olympia title was first introduced in 1980, and won by Rachel McLish, there are now more female categories at the Olympia than there are male divisions.

For the Olympia, diversity drives a bigger, more engaged, and better represented audience, and this is perhaps best illustrated by the wheelchair division, where the event and its sponsors have collaborated to increase the prize pool. “We’ve got more sponsorships, more prize money, and we are truly grateful,” says James Berger, who won the 2025 Olympia Wheelchair class. “That’s a lot of what kept us from wanting to compete, because traveling is hard… It costs a little bit more. But now the division is growing tremendously, and it’s top notch right now. We’re on the upswing and I can’t wait to see that it will be even better next year.”

So, What Next for the Olympia?

In 2026, Olympia offered a global live stream of Friday and Saturday’s finals, for free, and while the official website suffered crashes due to high demand, this exercise did serve to show promoters and sponsors just how popular the biggest bodybuilding show on earth really is. During the weekend, Olympia President Dan Solomon also confirmed that Joe Wieder’s Fitness and Performance expo at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which serves as a companion event to the Olympia, had smashed multiple records. The spotlights still shine bright then, for bodybuilding’s biggest annual event.

In terms of next year, organizers have announced that they hope to top this year’s success by returning to the Palms Hotel & Casino and running it back even better. But long term, Jake Wood is also floating the idea of bringing the Olympia to international host cities, more than 30 years after the last globe trotting Mr. Olympia was held in 1992 and hosted in Helsinki, Finland. Joe Weider’s Fitness & Performance Weekend also continues to evolve on its own merits, with the 2026 festivities including strength sports and Sumo, and even adding a Spartan race and a skateboarding showdown to the mix.

Of course, at the heart of the Olympia is community. Those who immerse themselves in sports, fitness, and bodybuilding are a group of likeminded people that focus on shared experiences rather than ethnicity, and brotherhoods rather than borders. Due to Olympia’s ability to mirror the different types of muscle that prevails in our society, the event is also searching for ways to encourage bodybuilders to flex their biceps for the greater good.

To that end, Dan Solomon recently shared a desire by the Joe Weider estate to introduce a humanitarian style Olympia award, that would reward athletes not just for bettering themselves, but also for finding a way to give back to the community. “The Olympia is essentially what we’ve been working our whole life for,” Breon Ansley tells M&F. “Olympia means just excellence… worldwide excellence.”

And so, for all these reasons, the best Olympia moments really could be yet to come.
