How ‘Toxic’ Is Your ‘Natural’ Weight-Loss Supplement? Check the Labels After This FDA

Every once in a while the supplement industry produces a story so ridiculous I couldn’t make it up if you gave me LSD and a deadline. Here’s this week’s entry. The FDA is warning consumers about weight-loss supplements containing yellow oleander. You know what yellow oleander is? Poison. Not “potentially problematic if taken in excessive doses.” Not “may cause stomach discomfort.” Poison.

On Sept. 17, the FDA expanded an existing safety alert after testing found toxic yellow oleander in three more dietary supplements. Two were Niwali products labeled as tejocote, and another was Easy Forte Natural Fiber. Then on Sept. 21, Global Mix recalled Niwali Tejocote Capsules and Tejocote Pieces after FDA testing showed the stuff labeled tejocote was actually yellow oleander.

Yellow oleander contains cardiac glycosides, compounds capable of screwing with the electrical activity of your heart. The FDA says ingestion can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, changes in heart rhythm and other neurological, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular problems. Severe cases can be fatal. So, basically, not the kind of pre-workout buzz you’re looking for.

FDA Finds Poison in Products Sold as Weight-Loss Supplements

Now, before somebody reads this and throws every bottle of whey protein in the garbage, let’s keep our heads screwed on. This is not evidence that the entire supplement industry is selling poison. It is evidence that buying mystery weight-loss products from random corners of the Internet because the label says HERBAL is not necessarily the act of enlightened health consciousness people think it is.

And this isn’t one isolated bottle. The FDA has been chasing yellow oleander masquerading as weight-loss botanicals since 2023. Products have been sold as tejocote root, Mexican hawthorn, Brazil seed, India seed and other botanical weight-loss products, often through online marketplaces. The agency says its investigation is ongoing and it continues testing suspect products.

It gets better. In August, FDA testing found one weight-loss product called DMagic Plus contained not only yellow-oleander compounds but undeclared diclofenac, a prescription NSAID. Another called B. Magi contained yellow-oleander compounds plus undeclared phenolphthalein, a chemical the FDA says studies suggest may increase cancer risk. Now we’re not even talking about whether the ingredient works. We’re trying to establish what the hell the ingredient is.

And that’s the part fitness consumers need to understand. “Natural” is a marketing word. Nature makes blueberries. Nature also makes rattlesnake venom. The bottle doesn’t become safe because somebody put a leaf on the label.

This is especially important in weight loss because desperation is an enormous market. People want something that works fast, requires little effort and preferably has some exotic name suggesting it was discovered by a 117-year-old monk living on a mountain. Tejocote root sounds better than “eat fewer calories.” So does Brazilian seed. So does detoxifying botanical metabolic matrix.

Skip the Magic Roots. Stick to What Works.

Meanwhile the boring stuff keeps working. Control calories. Eat enough protein. Lift weights. Move your ass. Sleep. If obesity warrants medical treatment, talk to an actual medical professional about drugs that have actual manufacturing standards and human clinical data. Not nearly as sexy as a bag of magic Mexican roots you found on the Internet, but there’s an advantage. You generally know what’s in it.

And if you’ve purchased any product on the FDA’s yellow-oleander warning list, their advice isn’t “use half a serving.” They’ll tell you to stop using it and throw it away. The FDA says people who’ve taken one of the identified products should contact a healthcare provider even if they haven’t used it recently.

There are plenty of ways to lose weight. Cardiac poisoning shouldn’t be one of them.
