‘Outer Banks’ Cast Respond to Fans Who Say The Show Was ‘Rivedale-ified’ And Share The Stories They Can’t Believe The Series Did

Yes, the Outer Banks cast knows that their show got a little silly at times. Deal with it.

Sitting down with DECIDER to chat about the fifth and final season of the Netflix series, stars Chase Stokes and Jonathan Daviss explained that while they understand why fans have spent the last few years talking about the show’s apparent “Riverdale-ification” — a.k.a. a show going off the rails from its original premise like CW’s Riverdale — they are just relieved that the show never went to the extents that the other series did.

“Thankfully we didn’t get hit by a comet and go back in time like Riverdale did,” Stokes joked.

“Camila Mendes and I showed a movie together called Do Revenge and I was complaining and I’m like, ‘Man, like, we’re doing this and we’re doing that in Outer Banks,’ and she looked at me and she goes, ‘We have superpowers this year,’ and I’m like ‘I’ll shut the hell up. I’m sorry,’” Daviss shared, saying Mendes added, “My character has slime powers, JD. Oh you’re treasure hunting again?’ You right. Yeah, I’ll shut the hell up. That’s my bad.”

Thankfully, Outer Banks never went as far, dark, or supernatural as Riverdale did in its final seasons, taking the cast — including Mendes, KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse, and Madelaine Petsch — into the world of “Rivervale,” an alternate reality where witches and ghosts roam free. The most serious crime that Outer Banks has to answer to is the “Blue Crown,” a fictional relic that the Pogues are searching for in the final season to try and bring JJ (Rudy Pankow) back to life. Of course it doesn’t work, though, so they at least can say they saved themselves from the craziness on that count.

As for what Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline says she cannot believe the show had her do in its five-season run, specifics evaded her, but she does have some pretty hilarious stories from moments where the Pogues are trying to get away and doing it pretty poorly.

“I think a lot of the scenes I will look back and remember fondly, but also when we were shooting them I was thinking, ‘What are we doing?’” she said with a laugh. “It would be the chase scenes, like when we’re running away, but very Scooby-Doo style. We go this way and then the bad guys go that way and then we pop out of an alley and then like we actually come face to face and then run the opposite way before they realize that they lost us.”

“I have had so many laughs, like I’ve had to turn my head away from the camera so many times while doing, just thinking of it and thinking about how funny it is. I’ll look back at those scenes,” she said. But even in that, Cline says she’s able to find something to love and be grateful for. “Also, it did keep me in shape, so I am appreciative.“

Outer Banks and Riverdale are both streaming on Netflix.

Netflix offers three subscription plans to fit your streaming needs. The plans start at $7.99/month for standard with ads and go up to $24.99/month for unlimited ad-free streaming in up to 4K UHD quality.
